I've learned some rather interesting news since yesterday. It started with me returning my mom's phone call. She'd actually been trying to get a hold of me since Friday but because I screen my phone calls, I didn't pick up any of her calls. So there I was, on the phone with her and she's asking me to let her use my name. Odd, right? Right. Before she tells me why she wants to "borrow" my name she tells me, "I'm only telling you this because you're my kid. If you weren't my kid I wouldn't let you in on this information I'm about to tell you." Apparently, her big hush-hush talk was about TelexFREE. She was doing her best at describing what she would be doing and the big profits she would be making. My first thought: scam. What followed was me yelling at the top of my lungs, "HOW MUCH MONEY DID YOU PUT IN?" If only I was able to reach through the phone and knock some sense into her! So you're wondering why this has to do with wanting to borrow my name, right? Well, because her monthly income is her social security check, she didn't want the profits or earnings from TelexFree to be tied to her. So basically she wanted me registered with TelexFree while she funds the whole thing.

My poor, poor mother.

More for today:

Family issues galore! Today, I received this voicemail from my brother Chua Ly: Click here. Let me transcribe this for you guys:

"Maisee! Stay the fuck out of my life! I'm gonna fucking kill your ass!"

Yeah, he's mad alright. Maybe the word mad is an understatement. Here's the breakdown of what lead to this:

February 7 I have a missed call from my mother.
February 8 i have 8 missed calls from my mother.
February 9 I have 4 missed calls from my mother. Of all of these missed calls, I'd only attempted to call her back twice. Yes, I do screen my calls. Yes, I have reasons to avoid talking to my mother. Anyhow, I finally managed to get a hold of her and her greeting was "Do you want to fight with money?" WTF? See, crazy talk! I threatened to hang up if she wasn't going to take the crazy out of the conversation. She complies and she starts telling me about a game she was playing that involved her money, similar to gambling at a casino. And then she asks me if I'd let her use my name to claim the profits or earnings for tax purposes and because she doesn't want to jeapardize her monthly social security checks. I mean, I wouldn't benefit from any of this. It's all about her. So naturally, I dig for more information.

Before she gave me any of the details, she began by saying, "I wouldn't be telling you any of this if you weren't my kid. This needs to stay between us."

So what was her big discovery? TelexFree. Yup, she thought she found a goldmine. And what's more? She "invested" $15K into this pyramid/ponzi scheme. No need to rub your eyes because you read that correctly. And to top things off, she is going to pay my brother $1000 a month for his services to post the online ads. Who, in their right mind, would ever allow his/her mother to get involved in any kind of pyramid/ponzi scheme? I guess for my brother it doesn't matter because 1) it's not his money that is getting invested, and 2) he stands to make $1000 a month. I, however, was determined to do whatever I possibily could to put a stop to this madness. I didn't get anywhere when I called my brother. His responses were, "I didn't put a gun to her head and forced her to do it" and "I don't care if it's a pyramid scheme." Of course! He stands to make $1000 a month from my mom's earnings (if she does make anything).
February 10 Long story short, I found out only $9K of the $15K had been invested. I was able to get my sister-in-law to withdrawal the remaining $6K of my mom's money so that my dad could go pick it up from them. I was doing whatever I could to prevent all $15K from getting "invested" into TelexFree. And once my brother got hold of this information...well, you can listen to the voicemail again.

Oh, but it doesn't end there. My mom also left me a very angry voicemail. She claimed that because of my actions, my brother and sister-in-law were now arguing and ready for a divorce. Needless to say, I didn't return this phone call and I haven't spoken to any of them since.

I've come to the realization that The Husband was right when he said, "Babe. You can't put out every fire. When you do, another one just gets started. Let them burn. That's the only way they will learn." I guess I just care too much. I understand it is not my money and I will probably never inherit any of it, but I just couldn't watch my parents get scammed out of their life's savings without trying to intervene. At least I know I tried. I could only hope TelexFree doesn't collapse before she gets her money back. And I can only hope that she didn't go behind my dad's back to "invest" even more money. So now, all I can do is wait and watch.

One last note to my brother: I hope you are smart enough to NEVER EVER pick up the phone to ask me for my help...

Happy birthday to me!

February 8, 2014

According to The Daughter, today is my 1/2 birthday. Yesterday, the kids came barging through the door telling me about the birthday cake they had just ordered for me. Their dad made it inside while the kids were still filling me on the surprise cake and said "Guys! Were you guys suppose to tell Mommy?"

"Oh!" They responded and continued on with their cake-ordering adventure.

"I'm so sorry, Babe. I kept reminding them the entire time not to say anything."

Fast forward to this afternoon...The Husband and The Daughter came home from dance practice with my surprise birthday cake. The Husband opened the box and noticed that the flowers on the cake had gotten smushed. I started laughing when he showed me. There is really nothing you can do but laugh. First it was the kids telling me about my surprise birthday cake. Then it was the smushed flowers. And to top it off, the cake did not have cream cheese frosting! The Husband had made the mistake of forgetting that I specifically asked for cream cheese frosting. He said, "They both had the word 'cream' it in." Haha. Not the same, buddy! He did make an effort to correct the order though. I guess the bakery must have missed the memo! Really, I'm just happy that the husband and kids remembered my birthday! :)

The Super Bowl was a disaster. I lost interest before it was half-time. I didn't watch the commercials or the half-time show. Peyton Manning and team just couldn't deliver. I wasn't the happiest Peyton Manning fan and I'm certain I wasn't the only one. During the game, The Son had declared, "I'm not going to school tomorrow if Peyton Mainning doesn't win." He must have been talking smack at school. Too bad for him he's going no matter what! :)
